A few words about Teba

Teba is a small town in the province of Málaga.

It is best known for its castle – El Castillo de la Estrella – which in Al-Andalus was known as Hisn Atiba. The ruins of the current castle date from the Almohad period, in the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was built on an ancient Christian defensive site.

It is the largest castle in the province of Málaga, covering an area of 25,000 square metres, with two fortified enclosures. Its walls are barricaded to the north-east and include 16 square towers, a circular tower, an octagonal tower and three access gates. It had at least seven cisterns – aljibes – and a large citadel.

The construction of various watchtowers in the surrounding areas also bears witness to the warlike atmosphere and insecurity of the last century of the Islamic Itaba. It was the scene of countless warlike battles due to its strategic position on the border between Christian western Andalucia and the Islamic peninsula to the east.

The strategic location of Teba and the castle

From its position some 600 metres above sea level, it dominates the entire plain of Antequera and the entrance to the Serranía de Ronda.

The origins of this celebration

Have you heard of Sir Douglas James, known in Andalucia as the Andalusian Braveheart? (When history meets history, it always ends up making …. stories).

To understand this unlikely historical event, we need to go back in time… 700 years. The year is 2025, so we’re going back to 1330.

And then we’ll begin our journey from Scotland to Andalucia.

In 1329, the King of the Scots, Robert I – Robert the Bruce – died after 30 years of reign and, above all, after fighting the English and gaining independence for his kingdom. He was a national hero.

And, for the record, he fought his first battles against the English alongside a certain William Wallace…

Robert the Bruce would become King of the Scots a few years later.

Before dying of leprosy, he had entrusted James Douglas, his most loyal army commander, with carrying out his last wish: that his heart be embalmed and then buried in the Holy Land, in Jerusalem.

So in 1330, a group of Scottish knights, led by James Douglas, set off by boat for Jerusalem.

The Battle of Hisn Atiba Castle in 1330

Alfonso XI, King of the Crown of Castile, learned that Scottish knights were sailing along the Spanish coast, near Valencia, and managed to persuade them to fight to take Hisn Itaba, the fortress of Itaba, which then belonged to the Nasrid kingdom of Granada.

The battle pitted a Christian army commanded by the Castilian king Alfonso XI against a Muslim army sent by the Nasrid emir Mohammed IV of Granada and commanded by the Merinid general Ozmín.

Note: Marinids or Merinids (Berber: ⴰⵢⵜ ⵎⵔⵉⵏ; Arabic: المرينيون, al-Marīniyūn) were a Berber dynasty that ruled in the Maghreb al-Aqsa (Morocco) between the 13th and 15th centuries. The Nasrid emirs of Granada had made a pact with the Marinids of Morocco: in exchange for being granted the lands of part of western Andalucia, the Marinids were to defend the western borders of the kingdom of Granada.

The battle was a success for the Crown of Castile, with the capture of the fortress, but James Douglas, like most of the Scots, perished in the battle.

This festival commemorates this period in history in the most beautiful way.

A monument has been erected in the town in memory of this event:

It has to be said that the Andalusian-Scottish atmosphere over the 4 days is one of the most agreeable.

The festival has two names: Jornadas escocesas deTeba and Douglas Days. Among the activities is a dramatised route – Lágrimas por Itaba – which retraces this historic event and ends at night in the ruins of the castle. A superb experience.

A final word: Robert I’s heart was repatriated to Scotland and is buried in Melrose Abbey. Melrose is now twinned with Teba.

Finally, I must mention the incredible way the Scots dress.

I even wondered how they did it, because not everything made it onto the plane….!

Congratulations on the atmosphere at the festival. And congratulations also to the Gibraltar music group!

Things are so much nicer this way. After all, after the war, we need to make peace…

If you’re passing through Teba, there’s also a great place to learn about history: the Municipal Historical Museum of Teba. It contains a fine collection of archaeological finds. The exhibition ranges from prehistoric to medieval, Renaissance and modern materials.

Of particular note are the Neolithic collections at the Cueva de las Palomas, the Final Bronze Age and Iberian remains at the Los Castillejos site, the Roman materials at the Cortijo del Tajo and those from Nina Alta (Al-Andalus period).
