Río Verde in Andalusia : canyoning and practical information
Río Verde: canyoning and hiking in a natural paradise in Andalusia
The Río Verde is one of those places you discover in Andalusia and never forget. Nestled in the Sierra de la Almijara, in the municipality of Otívar, in the province of Granada, this spectacular canyon offers exceptional mountain scenery, emerald-coloured waters, waterfalls, natural pools and rocky passages that seem to have been designed for adventure and canyoning.
If you’re looking for an experience that’s a bit different from the usual tourist trails in Andalusia, a day out at the Río Verde is an excellent idea. You can come here to walk, swim and enjoy nature, but also to embark on a real adventure by going canyoning in the Río Verde with a specialist guide.

The site is located in the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, near the Costa Tropical and not far from Nerja. The Junta de Andalucía itself describes the Río Verde canyons as an ideal spot for canyoning, whilst emphasising that this activity involves risks and must be undertaken with specialist staff and the necessary authorisation.
The Río Verde, a natural gem of the Sierra de la Almijara
The Río Verde has its source in the limestone hills of the Sierra de la Almijara. Over time, the water has carved out the rock, creating a series of gorges, canyons, waterfalls and natural pools.
The result is spectacular.
The water winds its way between the rock faces and, in places, forms large pools in incredible colours, ranging from deep green to turquoise. In some areas, it becomes perfectly clear, allowing you to see the rocky riverbed.
The landscape also changes as you walk or go canyoning.

Botanical diversity is, in fact, one of the route’s main attractions. The difficulty of accessing certain parts of the Río Verde has helped to preserve a rich variety of vegetation, including many species characteristic of these mountains.
It is also a landscape shaped by limestone. Erosion has slowly carved out the gorges and sculpted the rock formations we see today.
Sights along the Río Verde trail
Among the most astonishing natural wonders is the famous Cascada de los Árboles Petrificados – the Petrified Trees Waterfall – also known as Las Chorreras de los Palos.
This waterfall is one of the most remarkable sights in Río Verde.
Its name comes from an astonishing geological phenomenon: over time, the limestone-rich water has mineralised ancient tree trunks. Rock and vegetation have thus gradually merged to create these unique formations.
The Cascada de los Árboles Petrificados is one of the highlights of the route and perfectly illustrates how water gradually transforms the landscape.
Río Verde hike: an adventure between mountains and river
The Río Verde hike is an excellent way to explore the area without necessarily having to go canyoning.
The official route described by the Junta de Andalucía is approximately 6.9 kilometres one way and takes around three hours, with a difficulty rating of ‘high’. This route begins at the Collado de los Chortales, near kilometre 28.7 of the road linking Granada to Almuñécar.

However, it is worth noting that there are several ways to explore the Río Verde and that the routes taken by visitors do not always correspond exactly to the official trail.
From the access points situated further down, a particularly popular section of the route takes you to the most accessible natural pools and waterfalls.
You then begin to understand why this place has become one of the great classics of adventure in Andalusia.
The trail alternates between sections at higher ground, descents towards the river, river crossings and more rugged stretches.
On several occasions, you’ll need to cross the Río Verde to continue on your way. Depending on the water level, some crossings may be very easy, whilst others require greater caution.

This is therefore not just a simple family walk along a perfectly maintained path.
Some sections are slippery, particularly when the rocks are wet, and a few sections involve a significant climb. A good level of fitness and, above all, suitable footwear are essential.
The natural pools of the Río Verde
One of the great rewards of the hike comes when you reach the famous natural pools.
The water of the Río Verde is particularly beautiful, and its name takes on its full meaning here.

In the deepest pools, it takes on a magnificent emerald green colour. Surrounded by limestone cliffs and vegetation, these natural pools are the perfect places to take a break and cool off.
It is particularly for this reason that the Río Verde is especially pleasant in summer.
After walking under the Andalusian sun, being able to plunge into cool water amidst such a spectacular landscape is an experience you’ll remember for a long time to come.
Some people, in fact, come mainly to enjoy the first few swimming spots, without completing the entire route.

If you simply want to spend a day in the countryside, you can therefore tailor your walk to your fitness level and preferences.
On the other hand, if you want to explore the site to the full and venture into its wildest sections, you’ll need to allow more time and be prepared to tackle more technically challenging sections.
Canyoning on the Río Verde: an adventure on a grand scale
For thrill-seekers, the real treasure of Río Verde lies in its canyons.
Canyoning in the Río Verde is now one of the most iconic adventure activities in the province of Granada.
The concept is simple: you make your way down the canyon following the river’s course, alternating between walking, swimming, jumping, sliding, wading and abseiling.
The canyon is particularly enjoyable because it offers such a wide variety of experiences.
These include, in particular:
- natural pools with crystal-clear waters
- natural rock slides
- jumps into the pools
- abseils
- waterfalls
- river crossings
- narrow gorges and more open areas
- impressive limestone cliffs

The Río Verde canyon is also relatively open and light-filled compared to some other canyons. This is what gives it its unique atmosphere: you really feel as though you’re exploring a vast natural adventure park.
But here, there are no man-made trails. Everything has been created by the river and erosion.
Canyoning in the Río Verde with a guide
Although there are many accounts of people who have explored the Río Verde on their own, canyoning is an activity that should not be undertaken on a whim.
The Junta de Andalucía clearly states that canyoning requires prior authorisation and must be carried out with specialist staff.
Hiring a guide allows you to enjoy the experience with much greater peace of mind.
The guide knows the canyon, the various sections, the techniques for navigating it and the safety rules. They also adapt the activity to the group’s ability and accompany you through sections that can be daunting when encountered for the first time.
This is particularly important in a natural environment where conditions can change.
A river is never an amusement park: the flow, the weather, the condition of the rocks and the conditions in the canyon must always be taken into account.
With a professional, you can therefore focus on what really matters: enjoying the scenery, laughing with your fellow adventurers and experiencing that unique sensation of descending a canyon with your feet in the water.

The full Río Verde canyoning experience
For those who want to take it a step further, there is the option of completing the full descent of the Río Verde canyon.
The aim is to follow the canyon from its upper reaches down to the lower section, negotiating a series of natural obstacles along the way.
This route is longer and more physically demanding than the introductory routes.
However, it allows you to discover the full diversity of the canyon and understand why Río Verde is considered one of the top canyoning sites in southern Spain.

A half-day of canyoning is usually enough to enjoy a very fulfilling adventure, but you should allow extra time for the approach, preparation and return journey.
For some routes, reaching the upper section may also require a long approach walk or the use of a suitable vehicle.
This is one of the reasons why an organised trip with a guide is particularly appealing: the logistics are much simpler and you can focus entirely on the activity itself.
A day in the Río Verde: hiking or canyoning?
That’s ultimately the big question.
If you enjoy a leisurely walk, taking in the scenery, taking photos and swimming in the natural pools, hiking is an excellent option.
It allows you to take your time and enjoy the Río Verde at your own pace.
But if you love adventure and want to explore the canyon in a different way, canyoning in the Río Verde is undoubtedly the experience to go for.

Imagine sliding down a natural water slide, jumping into a pool of crystal-clear water, swimming between the canyon walls and then abseiling down a waterfall.
All set against a stunning mountain backdrop. It’s a completely different way to discover Andalusia.
Far from the historic cities, beaches and whitewashed villages, here you’ll enter a wilder, more secluded and profoundly natural side of Andalusia.

How do you get to the Río Verde in Otívar?

Take care on the access track: the track leading to the car parks is a dirt and gravel track, so you should drive slowly.

The morning also has another advantage: the light really brings out the colours of the pools. The emerald green of the water stands out beautifully against the rock faces.
In the middle or late afternoon, some pools are more in the shade and their colours may appear darker.

Flip-flops should be avoided at all costs. Although they might seem perfect for a day by the water, they quickly become dangerous on wet rocks.
