And that’s precisely what makes it so charming: few destinations allow you to move from snow-covered mountains to the narrow streets of Granada so easily, or to head down to Motril or Almuñécar in the afternoon and eat espetos de sardinas in a chiriguinto, with your feet in the sand….

Why go skiing in the Sierra Nevada?
When we think of Andalusia, we usually picture the Alhambra, the white villages, the flower-filled patios, flamenco and the beaches of the Costa del Sol. Skiing is much less likely to spring to mind.
Yet the Sierra Nevada boasts a particularly attractive ski area.
The resort is situated in the municipality of Monachil, above Granada.
It is the ski resort that is:
- the highest in Spain
- the southernmost in the whole of Europe.
- with the greatest skiable vertical drop in Spain, 1.2 km (from an altitude of 3,300 metres to 2,100 metres)
Tourism and skiing in Granada
Its proximity to Granada and the Alhambra – just 30 km away – is, in fact, one of the destination’s major attractions.
You can spend the morning on the slopes, head back down at the end of the day and enjoy Granada’s restaurants, bars and tapas in the evening. For a short break of a few days, this combination is particularly appealing.
And then there’s the light. Winter days can offer a spectacular contrast between the snow of the Sierra and the blue Andalusian sky.

The resort is centred around Pradollano, a proper resort village where you’ll find accommodation, restaurants, shops, ski schools and hire shops.
Higher up, the Borreguiles sector is one of the main starting points for skiing.
Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate skier or a seasoned visitor to major resorts, the ski area offers the chance to enjoy a wide variety of skiing experiences.
The Sulayr Snow Park for freestyle and snowboard enthusiasts
In the Loma de Dílar area, you can enjoy the Sulayr Superpark, a dream venue for snowboarders and freestyle skiers. And it’s always safe, as a specialist team checks all the jumps and rail features daily to ensure you get the most thrills with the least risk.
It is one of the largest and most comprehensive snowparks in Europe, designed for all levels of freestyle skiing and snowboarding: jump lines and features. It boasts a wide variety of snow jumps and obstacles (rails, boxes and features painted orange and black) spread across several sectors.

- Halfpipe: a large halfpipe for aerial tricks.
- Skicross: A dedicated course for this discipline, combining speed and obstacles.
- Minipark / Progression Park: Designed to introduce beginners and novice riders to the sport.
Where to stay in the Sierra Nevada ski resort?
This is probably the first thing to sort out when planning your holiday.
To make the most of your skiing, staying right in Pradollano is the most convenient option. You’ll be right in the heart of the resort, close to the ski lifts, restaurants and shops.
Book your hotel in the Sierra Nevada resort
If you’re planning to ski for several days, we recommend choosing a hotel or apartment as close as possible to the ski lifts.
It’s a small detail that makes a real difference in the morning: no need to take the car, hunt for a parking space or carry your kit for several hundred metres.
Note: for those looking for a luxury option right at the foot of the slopes, there’s the Melía Sol y Nieve hotel.
Should you stay at the foot of the Sierra Nevada ski area or in Granada?
Both options are possible, but they suit two different types of holiday.
Staying in Pradollano is ideal if skiing is your priority. You’ll be right in the resort and can start your day on the slopes without any extra travel.
Staying in Granada can be a good option if your main aim is to explore the city and you only plan to spend one or two days skiing.
For a proper skiing holiday, however, we’d recommend Pradollano. For a trip to Andalusia that includes a day’s skiing, Granada can be an excellent alternative.
Ski hire in the Sierra Nevada: should you book your equipment in advance?
Yes, especially during busy periods.
If you don’t want to travel with your own skis or snowboard, hiring on site is very straightforward. Sierra Nevada has hire shops in Pradollano and in the Borreguiles area.
The resort also allows you to book your equipment online in advance and then collect it on arrival.
You can hire various types of ski or snowboard equipment, saving you the hassle of transporting your own gear all the way to Andalusia.

Also remember to book well in advance if you’re travelling during school holidays or a busy weekend.
Which ski pass should you choose for Sierra Nevada?
You can’t ski in Sierra Nevada without a ski pass, and the options available depend largely on the length of your stay.
The resort offers various types of ski passes, which you can view directly on its official website.
For a short stay, the pass that corresponds to the number of days you plan to ski is usually the simplest option. For skiers planning multiple trips, longer-term passes may be a better value.
It’s important to check the terms and rates when you make your reservation: prices and promotions may vary from season to season.
Where can you buy a Sierra Nevada ski pass?
The easiest way is to view the available passes directly on the resort’s official website.
The official website currently offers early-bird sales for the 2026/2027 season: certain season passes or long-term passes valid for 10, 15, and 20 days come with a 20% discount for purchases made between September 15 and October 15, 2026.
For a quick two- or three-day getaway, check for passes that match your exact dates.
Is Sierra Nevada suitable for beginner skiers?
Yes.
Although the resort is sometimes associated with high-altitude skiing and experienced skiers, Sierra Nevada also welcomes beginners.
The ski schools and the various areas of the ski area allow you to progress gradually.
If you’re just starting out, taking a few hours of lessons can be an excellent idea. This is especially true for children or for those trying skiing for the first time.

Sierra Nevada in Winter with Kids
The resort can be a great destination for a family vacation.
The main advantage is being able to plan your days without having to travel all over the place: lodging, restaurants, equipment rentals, ski schools, and activities are all located right in the resort.
And if not everyone likes to ski, Sierra Nevada also offers snow-based activities for non-skiers.

How to get from Granada to the Sierra Nevada-Pradollano ski resort?
Easy access from Granada is one of the resort’s major advantages.
The A-395 highway connects Granada to Pradollano, where the ski resort is located.
So you can rent a car in Granada and drive directly to the resort.
There’s also a bus service between Granada and Sierra Nevada during the winter season. The Granada Tourist Office lists several daily departures in winter, with a schedule designed specifically to help you make the most of your day on the slopes.
Should you rent a car?
A car obviously gives you more freedom, especially if you are travelling with your family or carrying a lot of equipment.
However, in winter, weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Before setting off, always check the road conditions and the weather forecast.
Once you arrive in Pradollano, several car parks are available, including a covered car park beneath Plaza de Andalucía and several outdoor parking areas. Parking is paid.
Note: the car park has machines where you can buy your ski pass directly! If you have your equipment in the car, you can get changed there, buy your ski pass, leave the car park and take the gondola, which is located right next to it. :))

Can you combine skiing with a visit to Granada?
Absolutely — this is actually one of the best reasons to choose Sierra Nevada.
Imagine a four-day trip to Andalusia.
Day 1: Granada
Arrive in Granada, stroll through the Albaicín, explore the historic centre and spend the evening enjoying tapas.
Note: English-speaking guides offer private guided tours of the Alhambra, as well as the famous Albaicín and Sacromonte neighbourhoods.
Day 2: Sierra Nevada
Head up into the mountains and spend a full day on the slopes.
Day 3: Skiing
Enjoy a second day of skiing, perhaps with a few hours of lessons or by exploring another area of the resort.
Day 4: Granada
Return to Granada and enjoy one last stroll before continuing your journey through Andalusia.
This way, you get to enjoy two completely different experiences: the mountains and Andalusian culture.

When should you go skiing in Sierra Nevada?
The ski season obviously depends on snow conditions and the resort’s opening schedule.
When planning your trip, it is therefore best to check the latest information directly with Sierra Nevada before booking.
Conditions can vary considerably from one period to another, and information available several months in advance cannot guarantee snow conditions at the time of your stay. The resort is generally open from late November to late April.
Our advice: book your accommodation, but check the skiing conditions a few days before you leave.
What should you pack for Sierra Nevada in winter?
Even if you are coming from Andalusia to enjoy the sunshine, don’t forget that you are heading into high mountains.

Sun protection is particularly important at high altitude, even when temperatures are low.
Can you visit Pradollano-Sierra Nevada without skiing?
Absolutely.
The mountains are about much more than skiing. Non-skiers can enjoy the snow, the scenery and some of the activities available at the resort.
You can also simply buy a gondola ticket and head up for lunch at the mountain restaurant, Alcazaba.
You can also choose to book a snowshoeing excursion.
This is another reason why Sierra Nevada works so well for family trips or groups where not everyone skis.
And if you have several days to spare, there is nothing stopping you from combining a day in the mountains with a visit to Granada.

So, should you go skiing in Sierra Nevada?
Yes, especially if you are already travelling in Andalusia.
Sierra Nevada may not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think of a ski holiday. And that is precisely what makes it interesting.
You can ski at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres, enjoy a ski area with more than 110 km of slopes, stay right at the foot of the slopes in Pradollano and, just a few hours later, enjoy tapas in Granada.

For a weekend getaway, a family trip or a few days combining the mountains with Andalusian culture, Sierra Nevada is a destination worth discovering.
Our advice: for your first ski trip to Sierra Nevada, staying in Pradollano, we recommend booking at least your accommodation and equipment in advance. You can then enjoy the mountains as soon as you arrive, without spending your first morning organising everything.
One final tip: avoid the local school holidays, as the resort gets very busy during this period, which always includes the last week of the year.
